Make your home a safe place to livePosted: July 22, 2013
As you age you want to make some adjustments to your home to prevent accidents. Here are a few helpful suggestions.
-have handrails on both sides of the stairs. Make sure they are tightly fastened.
-keep the areas where you walk free of clutter.
-don’t use throw rugs or small area rugs that move around
-check that all carpets are fixed firmly to the floor so they won’t slip. You can buy n-slip strips at the hardware store
-have a light close to your bed and a nightlight in halls and bathroom
-keep a phone next to your bed
-I buy all my clients push lights for x-mas. They are perfect to keep in the bedroom and bathroom. Great for times when you lose power. You simply push on the light and it turns on. Push again it’s off. I bring them on vacation with me. Walmart has them reasonably priced.
-keep electrical cords and telephone wires near walls and away from walking paths
-tack down all large area rugs
-make sure sofas and chairs are the rights height for you. Chairs should have arms. You can add a dense form cushion to add height.
-don’t walk on newly wet floors
-keep items you use often within easy reach
-don’t stand on chair to reach things-ask for help-or buy a reach stick(can be found at medical supply companies)
-If you have pets, know where they are when you’re walking.
-Keep emergency numbers in large print by your phone..
